We’ve mentioned previously that in 2017, we are fully immersed in an age of data visualization. So as a business owner you know you should be posting visually appealing content to your social media platforms and website. But maybe you don’t have the design experience or the budget to hire a graphic designer to do the work for you. Well, have no fear, because we’re going to introduce you to your new design BFF: Canva!
Here’s why we love Canva SO MUCH:
- No design skill needed
- Super easy to create graphics for social media
- Has almost any tool you can imagine
- IT’S FREE
To date, Canvas has been active for 5 years, with over 10 million users and 100 millions designs created! Melanie Perkins came up with the idea for Canva when she noticed students struggling in her graphic design program. They wanted to create an online tool that made it easy for students and teachers to create their own yearbook – not even realizing it could be utilized all across the design world. In 2013, Canva launched its Beta, allowing marketers, bloggers, and small business owners to create beautiful designs all around the world.
So this is where you come in – a small business owner in need of a beautiful design!
Canvas user-friendly interface is where we’ll start off.
Simply hit “Create a Design” and an array of template choices are presented!
They recommend designs like posters, Facebook Posts, and Wedding Invitations. But as you keep exploring you will find super specific templates:
Need to post on social media?
Have you written a eBook and now you need some killer graphics?
Marketing materials? Canva has you covered:
Updating your social media profile? Check out all these templates to set you a part from your competition!
So as you can see, there are plenty of pre made designs to choose from. Which is fantastic for quick projects! But maybe you have something a little more unique in mind…
On the left side navigation panel, you will see a few different options:
Search: browse exactly what you are looking for. Canva has an extensive collection of photographs and illustrations – most of which are free!
Layouts: Layouts are amazing for creating an image with killer organization, and especially great for incorporating photos into your design.
Elements: You can easily drag and drop designs onto your image. These include free photos, grids, frames, shapes, lines, illustrations, icons, and charts!
Text: Pretty self-explanatory. But Canva offers a super long list of fonts, as well as customizable text designs.
Background: The background tab gives you access to a huge selection of background choices for your design.
Uploads: This tab is for if you have something of your own to incorporate into the design. This is especially great if you want to load your business’ logo or any business specific photographs!
We LOVE the customizable design features Canva offers, because they give you a chance to experiment and explore your design skills! Nothing is ever permanent in your designs, because once you create your account, your designs are always saved. You can always go back and undo a part of a design, or add something more!
As you can probably tell, at Visual Inspiration, we LOVE Canva. We think it is a fantastic tool for small business owners to spice up their design and graphics for social media and marketing. We hope you’ll give it a try, and that you’ll share with us what you think about Canva and any design work you’ve done using it. Be sure to share your images with us on Facebook!
